Galcher Lustwerk strips back the upbeat original ‘Can you’, looping and manipulating Hye Jin’s half-spoken-half-sung vocals over minimal percussion and a loose baseline.
The release is the latest highlight in what has been an incredible year for the young rapper, singer, DJ and producer. Her “How can I” EP, released earlier this year on Ninja Tune, was met with a phenomenal response from fans and critics alike, with support from Rolling Stone, The Guardian, V Magazine, Pitchfork, Nylon, Jezebel, FADER, DAZED, i-D, Mixmag, Billboard, E!, Resident Advisor, Stereogum, NME, Exclaim!, Hypebeast and many more.
The lead single “Like this”—hailed by Mixmag as one of the “best tracks of 2020 so far” and recently featured on the FIFA 2021 soundtrack—was supported across BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music (where it was playlisted for multiple weeks) with plays from Annie Mac, Clara Amfo, Lauren Laverne, Phil Taggart and many more. In the US the track was #1 of ‘Top Electronic’ in the NACC Charts (North American College and Community Radio), and in the ‘Top 200’ overall, with further support from KEXP, KCRW, SiriusXMU and more.
The remix release follows on from her recent collaboration with Blood Orange, who added his own vocals to Hye Jin’s “CALL ME” in what the New York Times described as a “suspended, isolated, wondering” take on the song.

I'm completely obsessed w/the b&w 90s music vid fashion. Experiencing a visual representation of this music makes it all the more enjoyable. This collection is as soothing as it is stirring; as it always is with Actress. c420

All the tracks are great but Stepper is the standout for me! pounding syncopated kicks, rolling handdrums and playful sample work, dancefloor destroyer. Jack G.

The intricate, high frequency percussive touches that adorn Wheele at 2:53 are subtle but expertly balanced. This dancefloor-shattering masterpiece is a suitable alternative to a feather duster when it comes to cleaning your subwoofer. hthomson
